What to Wear for Your Maternity Session

The most beautiful maternity images I've ever created weren't about the outfit. They were about the woman inside it — the way she held her belly, the way light followed the curve of her body, the way she looked at her partner like they were the only two people left on earth.

That said, I know the question weighs on you. So here's what I've learned.

Choose texture over trend

Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully. Silk, chiffon, linen, knit — anything that moves with your body rather than constraining it. Solid, muted tones tend to age better than bold prints, and they keep the eye on you rather than the fabric.

Think earth tones, deep jewel tones, cream, charcoal, blush. If it feels like something you'd find in a Renaissance painting, you're on the right track.

Comfort is non-negotiable

If you're tugging at a neckline or adjusting a waistband, your body is telling a story of discomfort — and the camera reads it. Wear something that lets you breathe, move, and forget about your clothes entirely. Some of my favorite sessions have happened in a partner's oversized shirt and nothing else.

The case for less

Bare skin is always an option. A draped fabric. An open robe. Your body is doing the most extraordinary thing it will ever do — there is nothing to hide and everything to celebrate. But only if that feels true for you. I will never push you toward something that doesn't feel aligned.

What actually matters

Your presence. Your breath. The way your hands instinctively find your belly. Those are the things that make a maternity portrait timeless. The wardrobe is just the frame — you are the painting.
